Moggy in the movies – the first cat on film

Falling Cat (1894) features the first cat seen on screen

Étienne-Jules Marey introduced the cat to the world of cinema in 1894 in the film Falling Cat. Using a photographic device which took just twelve frames a second, he was able to capture a piece of film history, a cat falling from several feet.

Apparently Marey had been experimenting to see if the cat would always land on it’s feet. The name of the cat remains a mystery and there don’t seem to be any sequels, which is a shame as Soaring Pussy was a hit film just waiting to happen…
