Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope: My top 10 favourite characters

After tackling reviewing Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope in considerable detail, I thought I would ease up with this next post and do something a little lighter. I decided to pick out my ten favourite characters. If you have read my full review of the film then you will know I have a thing about background creatures and monsters, so my top ten might contain some lesser known characters.

In the meantime, here are my top ten characters:

  1. Ben Obi Wan Kenobi – a ridiculously cool name, lives on his own, wears rags yet still manages to exude sophistication
  2. Han Solo – the cocky, self-assured pilot has the kind of swagger every man wishes they could pull off, oh yes and he manages to wear a waistcoat and not look like a wannabe magician
  3. Chewbacca – I have to rank him high because he goes hand-in-hand with Han Solo and is totally inoffensive, except for when he pushes Luke away when Luke tries to bind Chewbacca’s hands in the cell block
  4. Darth Vader – of course
  5. C3P0 – comedic, camp and necessary
  6. Ponda Baba – this poor chap is enjoying a nice drink in the Cantina, remarks to his friend that he doesn’t like Luke. The friend, Dr Evazan then starts on Luke. A squirmish ensues and Ponda Baba loses his arm to a lightsabre. Does he recover? Was this really his fault? This vexes me to this day!
  7. Muftak – blink and you will miss him, he is in the Cantina. He looks so darned adorable, the kind of creature who you could get along with. He should have had a speaking part
  8. Garindan – this is the spy who tips of the stormtroopers to Luke and Ben’s whereabouts. I think I like his snout and the fact he wears goggles, but clearly the kind of creature who would have told on you at school
  9. Grand Moff Tarkin – just because it’s Peter Cushing
  10. Power Droid – I think these fascinated me because they looked like a television that could walk. Cumbersome and slow but they always seem to be walking about!

Where is Princess Leia?!
